Bank stabilisation using willow spiling on a Sustrans Cycle Path

Sustrans have a cycle path which is well-used as it takes cyclists off the busy A417. It runs along a section of the River Severn, in places, very close to the River Severn, and was eroding badly.

Could the river provide the solution? This particular river is heavily silt-laden so we decided to try to get the river to drop its silt along the bank - doing the job of erosion control for us.

Live willow spiling was installed in the winter in a restricted space without closing the cycle path. The willow was able to withstand a complete submergence by high water levels within a few week's of completion.

The solution is working well to protect the bank from erosion and is in keeping with the rest of the cycle path.

We can assess your erosion control problem, often from photos emailed to us, and provide advice on solutions. We offer willow spiling, pre-planted coir rolls, combined solutions and river engineering. We can also deal with Environment Agency licences for work on watercourses if applicable.
