Japanese Knotweed control - Littlecombe

Japanese Knotweed (Fallopia japonica)

Client: St Modwen

Project outline

Initial site analysis: Multiple pockets of established Japanese knotweed spread over a 50ha site in a range of situations from wooded areas, embankments footpaths and residential boundaries .

Treatment: Multi pronged attack including ‘dig and dump’, herbicide application and deep burial.

Implementation: The scale of the site called for a Japanese Knotweed Management plan to be compiled ensuring thorough and strategic management of the site. Due to the site specific variations, no single method was suitable for all areas of infestation. The scale of the site allowed us to implement methods that would otherwise be unsuitable in smaller areas such as excavating the contaminated spoil onto a membrane lined area and treating any new growth that emerged. This proved to be extremely successful and efficient in dealing with the contamination.

Other methods included spot spraying the sporadic growth of small stands of Japanese Knotweed across the site which also offered an opportunity to monitor for any new stands that could develop over time. A variety of herbicides were used depending on where the knotweed was located and future plans for that area of land. One such area had an active population of badgers in a woodland situation and another area was due to be disturbed for development determining the correct chemical that could be applied.

Result: Over time, 20 areas of identified Japanese Knotweed have been reduced to just 5 in which the stands are in their final stages of eradication - all of which are located in particularly difficult areas.

We can provide eradication services and ongoing management plans for Japanese Knotweed and other invasive non-native species.
