The Brief:
JPR Environmental was appointed to address erosion along The Cut, which had damaged sections of the adjacent footpath and riverbanks.
The project focused on two key areas: stabilising the upper banks and footpath, and repairing sections downstream of the sluice. The works aimed to provide long-term bank stability, restore safe public access and minimise ecological impacts.
The Solution:
Upper Banks & Footpath
Oak timber sleepers were installed along eroded sections of the bank and backfilled with Type 1 gravel to provide support and improve drainage. Damaged sections of the footpath were also reinstated using Type 1 gravel.
The footpath was temporarily closed and diverted during the works to maintain public safety, with ecological surveys undertaken to assess potential impacts on local wildlife.
Downstream of Sluice
A temporary access road was installed across the client’s garden to provide access to the middle land. Rock rolls were then installed along the bed and toe of the bank, four rolls high in an interlocking pattern, secured with road pins and backfilled with Type 1 gravel.
The bank was rebuilt and reinforced using Flex MSE vegetated bags or concrete-filled bags, depending on site requirements. A new footpath and handrail were installed above the repaired bank to restore safe public access.
The Result:
The works successfully stabilised the eroding banks, reduced the risk of future erosion and reinstated safe footpath access.
The combination of oak timber sleepers, rock rolls and flexible bank reinforcement provided a durable solution designed to integrate with the surrounding landscape while addressing the erosion issues along The Cut.
