The Brief:
JPR Environmental was appointed by the Walk Wheel Cycle Trust to address ongoing erosion issues at two key locations along a multi-use path near Rainworth. The project aimed to stabilise the riverbank and path embankment, restore safe access for path users and introduce sustainable, ecologically sensitive solutions to prevent further erosion.
The works focused on replacing temporary repairs with long-term natural reinforcement methods, while enhancing the surrounding environment through native planting and habitat-friendly materials.
The Solution:
Riverbank Restoration
A fallen tree had destabilised the riverbank, resulting in ongoing erosion and a temporary repair using concrete bags. These were carefully removed to allow a more sustainable and environmentally sensitive solution to be installed.
Three layers of stone-filled rock rolls were pinned into the riverbed to reinforce approximately 16 metres of riverbank and provide long-term protection against further erosion. Flex MSE soil bags were then installed above the rock rolls to rebuild the bank profile, retain soil and create a more natural appearance.
Small excavators and hand tools were used to remove the existing concrete bags, with all temporary materials safely disposed of offsite. A new post and rail fence was installed along the track to clearly define its edge and protect the completed works.
Path Embankment Stabilisation
At the second location, a heavily eroded gulley had developed as a result of a foot traffic desire line, causing material from the embankment to slump onto the path below.
The bank was regraded to remove the gulley, with excavated material reused as backfill. A 400mm-high retaining wall was constructed using layered larch sleepers, incorporating Deadman sleepers and drainage to provide additional stability.
The regraded slope was then protected using a biodegradable coir erosion blanket and planted with native shrubs to provide long-term reinforcement and ecological enhancement. A dead hedge and reinstated post and rail fence were also installed to discourage further foot traffic and protect the newly stabilised embankment.
The Result:
The works have provided long-term stabilisation at both erosion sites, protecting the multi-use path from further slumping and improving safety and accessibility for users.
The combination of rock rolls, Flex MSE soil bags, timber retaining structures, coir erosion control and native planting has provided a sustainable alternative to temporary repairs while enhancing the surrounding habitat.
Careful removal of the existing concrete repairs, reuse of excavated material and the use of natural and biodegradable materials ensured the works were delivered with minimal environmental impact.
The project demonstrates JPR Environmental’s ability to deliver practical, nature-based erosion control and stabilisation solutions that protect public access routes while providing wider environmental and ecological benefits.
