Bank stabilisation using willow spiling on housing development
What do you do if previous attempts to stabilise a bank using concrete and stone (hard-engineering) have failed? In this instance, we used willow spiling along a section of earth bank that supports an access road to a housing development.
- Newly installed willow spiling
- One year after installation
As this was a residential setting, we chose a number of willow varieties for their aesthetic appeal.
The solution couldn’t have been better: the development now has a lovely, willow bank with lush foliage in summer and plenty of colour from the rods in winter. A bank that was prone to erosion has been stabilised and there is no danger of the mill race being overgrown.
