Desilting works on a millpond – Duck Hollow

Pond desilting, vegetation clearance and channel outlet creation

The client had purchased a property in  Gloucestershire with a picturesque but rather overgrown and silted up pond and were looking to clear the pond and create more depth in the water. The pond had been colonised by reedmace which was trapping sediment and would have dominated completely if not dealt with.

Silt survey and laboratory analysis

The silt survey and lab analysis helped us to ascertain the best way to clear the silt and develop a programme of works: desiltation, drying of the silt, creation of a new water inlet and outlet (to allow water to move more freely without drying up).

Over 1000 cubic metres of silt was removed

The removed silt was bunded and used to form a new terrace garden – saving the client a considerable amount of money as offsite removal would have been very expensive.

The client has their desired water vista with a pond that will be easier to manage in the future

The client can now look out onto a carefully landscaped lake.  The water level is much deeper than before and flows freely through the new inlet and outlet.  The millpond should stay as open water and be less susceptible to being colonoised under vegetation.
