Ecology

Ecological contracting forms the backbone of JPR’s activities. One of the country’s leading specialists, whether you need an ecological mitigation strategy implementing, or a team to deliver management of a project or series of projects, JPR is the right choice. We regularly collaborate with a wide range of ecology firms in the UK to ensure all key performance indicators are met for both Biodiversity Net Gain measurement and for the conservation of protected species.

Protected Species

We are committed to safeguarding protected species while carrying out our projects. We work closely with ecologists to carefully assess habitats and identify the presence of wildlife such as great crested newts, eels, bats, otters, water voles, badgers, and rare plants. Our approach ensures that construction and restoration activities are planned around the needs of these species, incorporating measures like habitat creation, translocation, or seasonal restrictions where necessary. By utilising a sensitive approach and integrating wildlife protection into our projects, we help maintain biodiversity and support thriving ecosystems, ensuring that our work benefits both people and nature.

Wildlife Fencing

JPR are a leading installer of wildlife fencing, with multiple options available. We have worked on projects for both temporary and permanent wildlife fencing to meet mitigation strategies for protect species required as part of a development project.

From great crested newts, adders and slow worms, to badgers, deer and tree protection, using the right fencing installed correctly is crucial for protection efforts.

Habitat Creation

An important element of any ecological restoration project is the enhancement of habitats damaged or degraded by previous activities. JPR’s teams can work to improve the quality of existing habitats, support biodiversity and counteract negative impacts of previous works, achieving a BNG for any project.

Whenever sensitive or protected species are present in a planned development area, planning permission will often stipulate the creation of alternative habitat, offsetting that which is lost and the translocation of animals to a receptor site – maintaining species diversity and preventing damage to the population. JPR has worked on projects across the country, liaising with clients, ecologists and planning professionals to ensure all criteria are met and developments can proceed as planned.

Artificial Badger Sett and Otter Holt Creation

The creation of artificial habitats is sometimes required to allow a species to be moved from a development or simply due to the habitat not being present. Artificial badger setts are a regular feature of our services, built to Natural England specification and tailored to suit the site.

Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG)

Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) is an approach that ensures development or land use changes leave the natural environment in a better state than before. It goes beyond simply avoiding harm, requiring that any impact on habitats, species, and ecosystems is compensated by measurable improvements elsewhere. By integrating BNG into projects, businesses and developers help protect wildlife, restore ecosystems, and contribute to a more resilient and sustainable natural environment.

At JPR Environmental, we support clients in implementing BNG strategies that balance development needs with nature conservation.

Sensitive Vegetation Clearance

We recognise that vegetation clearance may sometimes be necessary, even in ecologically sensitive areas. JPR approaches this work with care, removing only what is essential while striving to preserve as much ecological diversity as possible, ensuring development needs are met responsibly.

Where invasive species are present, we follow approved industry standard methods, prioritising their removal to support the recovery of native ecosystems and reduce long-term ecological impacts.

JPR undertook the installation of walling along a bank of river into which white-clawed crayfish were to be translocated.

Artificial Badger Sett

We were asked to look into mitigation for a cete of badgers from the edge of a nature reserve so that development for a major retail village could begin.

Knotweed Eradication

This site had multiple pockets of established Japanese Knotweed spread over 50 hectares which needed to be treated before development could start.
