Somerset Levels & Moors Wetland Creation

We are proud to have been appointed as Principal Contractor by YTL, on behalf of Wessex Water, to deliver a pioneering wetland creation scheme in the Somerset Levels.
This trial project, developed in collaboration with the Environment Agency, is designed to explore how landscape-scale, integrated constructed wetlands can reduce nutrient levels in rivers.
Importantly, there are no upstream Wessex Water assets influencing this scheme. Instead, the focus is on treating agricultural run-off and other diffuse nutrient sources, with the aim of improving water quality before it enters the Somerset Levels and Moors SSSI.

Project Overview

  • 13 hectares of new wetland creation
  • 12 hectares of low nutrient grassland
  • Located close to the Shapwick Moor nature reserve.
  • Designed to improve water quality and support resilient local ecosystems

What This Project Will Achieve

  1. Improved Water Quality: Natural filtration to remove elevated phosphate levels
  2. Flow & Catchment Management: Slowing and storing water to reduce downstream environmental pressure
  3. Biodiversity Enhancement: Creating and restoring habitats across the Somerset Levels

Our Role

As Principal Contractor, we will lead the delivery of this nature-based solution, working collaboratively with stakeholders to ensure high-quality, sustainable outcomes. This project reflects our continued commitment to advancing natural solutions that enhance water quality and build long-term ecological resilience.
