We were delighted to welcome the Wessex Water great crested newt detection team to our Somerset Levels Wetland Creation site.
Working alongside his handler Nikki, Obi – a highly trained detection dog – carried out thorough site checks to ensure our work can proceed without impacting this protected species.
Great crested newts are in decline across the UK and Europe and are legally protected, making thorough ecological surveys essential before any construction begins. With his exceptional sense of smell, Obi can detect newts both above and below ground (up to 2 metres), helping ecologists safely identify and relocate them under licence.
