Willow spiling for soil erosion control
The land adjacent to the brook in Armscroft Park, Gloucester was being eroded and undercut and threatening to undermine a footpath. Gloucester City Council engaged JPR to come up with an erosion control solution. The area was inaccessible with heavy machinery so the project could not involve hard landscaping. We decided that willow spiling would be the most suitable and cost-effective method of erosion control.
Because of the height and severity of the undercutting, we installed live willow spiling over two tiers, rising up to a maximum of 0.5m on each tier. The bank was re-graded to around 45 degrees and the toe of the bank was protected underwater with stone. Post and rail protective fencing was replaced as necessary.
The bank has been strengthened and the under-cutting problem eliminated. The footpath is now safe from being eroded and falling into the brook. The solution is attractive and cost a fraction of a hard landscaping solution, which would have been difficult on this inaccessible site.
